DeSoto County ranked among the top places in Mississippi due to a strong showing in each of the factors considered including business growth, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth, new building permits and federal funding.
DeSoto County has been blessed with prosperity in businesses locating here and in job creation. The Board of Supervisors grills every company who requests incentives on the importance of hiring locally. Legally that cannot be a requirement, but it is encouraged. Companies are willing and like to hire locally. We hear that we have a good workforce. Jim Flanagan, our Economic Council Director, is the envy of the State of Mississippi. He works hard to bring companies to the table; and the Board of Supervisors and the cities have been willing to grant incentives for their investments when the investments were significant enough for them to apply. In 2018 the Board of Supervisors granted 17 Freeport incentives and 17 Real and Personal incentives. Consequently, DeSoto County has kept unemployment in the 4.1 range. That’s remarkable!
But taxpayers should be aware that tax incentives are NOT exemptions from taxes. These companies pay about 67% of their taxes. And those payments are significant. People should know that incentivized companies become “full paying” companies after ten years. And that strategy has protected residential taxpayers in DeSoto County for decades. You have to go far down the scale of taxpayers in DeSoto County to get to a residential taxpayer. It is not that way in every county.
This is just one example of how the DeSoto County Board of Supervisors is working for you, and why I count it a pleasure to work for them.
