DESOTO COUNTY, MS - The DeSoto County Board of Supervisors is pleased Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. (AWG) chose Hernando to create its state–of-the-art automated distribution hub. “It's the first of its kind in the United States and it’s going to be right here in DeSoto County,” said District 4 Supervisor Lee Caldwell. AWG currently operates facilities in Memphis and Southaven. Those locations will be consolidated into the new facility in Hernando. The company expects to initially employ a total of 590 workers. “We are pleased AWG is keeping jobs in the county and promises to create additional high-paying technology-based jobs,” said Jessie Medlin, DeSoto County Board of Supervisors President. One reason AWG chose the location off of Hwy 51 in Hernando was its proximity to I-55 & I-69. Part of Hwy 51 will be widened and traffic signals will be added to minimize congestion. “We want people who live and travel through the area to know the county is working to ensure traffic runs smoothly,” said Caldwell. AWG expects to break ground this summer and have the automated facility operational in 2023.
