As part of the Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB), the Crime Scene Unit (CSU) is staffed by several Crime Scene Investigators (CSI) who specialize in locating and collecting physical evidence in criminal cases. CSIs receive advanced training and have highly specialized equipment to assist them in processing the scenes of major crimes. In addition to on-scene investigations, CSIs also use a special processing facility to develop trace evidence using chemicals, alternate light sources, specialized photography, and alternate light sources.
The CSU also includes Crime Scene Technicians (CST) who are on duty 24-hours a day to respond to crime scenes as quickly as possible. Our CSTs are senior patrol Deputies who are assigned to Patrol Division and perform their duties as a CST as an additional duty to their regular patrol functions.
CSU personnel also staff the Evidence and Property Unit making sure that evidence collected is organized and secure. Evidence in criminal cases include weapons, narcotics, recovered stolen property, and forensic evidence.
